District Truancy Service

For the schools within the Te Kuiti area the Trust provides a comprehensive Truancy service to schools who are experiencing difficulties with non attendance by students.

An approach which advocates involving all stakeholders is used, where whanau, the school and the student work through the issues for student non attendance together.  A back to class plan is developed with input of all parties; and responsibilities for each party is defined and committed to.

The District Truancy Worker monitors, progress and work with the school, the whanau and the student to ensure each continue with their commitment and restore the students   regular attendance at school.

Alternative schooling has developed as an option along with the introduction of STAR programmes run by the Maniapoto Training Agency for the schools.

The Home Reading programme has been a significant contributor to reducing truancy, by early intervention for poor readers by developing an individualised home/school educational reading programme for slower learners.
