Mana Kainga Pilot Programme (Health Funding Authority)
Statement of purpose
This programme is to encourage Maori families to take a greater level of
responsibility for the standard of health of all members within the home.
The programme will promote the concept of the home being the health and recreation
centre. These objectives of the Mana Kainga pilot will reflect Maori health in the
identified five areas.
 | Will provide promotional and educational hui for family good health. |
 | Provide a family health co-ordinator to work with facilities in their homes who will
provide guidance and advice for managing the families health in the homes. |
 | Will gather together the resources of other specialist primary health providers so a
holistic approach to good health is achieved, in the home, for Maori families. |
 | Conduct research to identify specific needs of Maori Health requirements in Maniapoto
rohe. |
 | Manage a Pilot project of up to 20 Maori family homes, where health resources and
support are continually provided over 12 months and the results evaluated in an effort to
increase future gains for health in the home. |
Resources required to ensure that Mana Kainga programme is established
A health co-ordinator who will target up to 200 homes within the region to gauge
response to the Mana Kainga programmes. To identify up to 20 homes willing to
participate in the Mana Kainga programme.
Mana Kainga is not a programme for "treatment only" centred delivery.
Mana Kainga is about focusing toward:
 | Promoting the concept of the home being the health and recreation centre |
 | Education, parenting nutrition, healthy lifestyles to promote both physical and mental
well-being. |
 | network whanau support, agencies, link with other whanau. |
 | Communication to understand Marae protocol and learning about ourselves. |
 | Access to good health services.' |
It is an empowerment programme to improve the health status of people in the home.
Education and Promotion
To facilitate the exchange of information, resources and skills which empowers
people to take greater control of their own health and well-being.
To identify opportunities by which people can access appropriate health services.
Community Development
To establish working relationship with iwi/hapu/rangatahi groups.
To provide assistance in developing health issues
